Image Description:
The eccentric strap has an arm "B" extending perpendicularly downward, the lower end of which arm is held by a slide working in a guide "A" The valve rod is connected to the perpendicular arm "B" of the eccentric strap at right angles. The guide is tilted by means of the reverse lever, so that, when this eccentric arm moves up and down, the end of the arm also moves laterally, corresponding to the tilt of the guide. This lateral movement gives the valve its travel.
The tilt of the guide may be in either direction, so as to give either forward or backward movement of the valve and can be set for any desired length of valve throw. Thus the amount of steam admitted to the cylinder is under perfect control of the engineer, so that he can, as desired, set the valve throw at any variation between the maximum, when the guide is fully tilted, and the minimum, when the guide is perpendicular.
