Image Description:
The Rice Automatic Cut-off Engine.
We illustrate in this connection two of the leading types of the Rice automatic cut-off engine, the sale of which is controlled by Fairbanks, Morse & Co., of St. Louis, Kansas City, Chicago, etc.
Fig. 1 shows the single cylinder engine, and Fig. 2 the tandem compound. The features calling for special mention are the following: It is a self-contained side crank engine, with two separate bearings within the engine bed itself. This prevents the engine from being injured by any settling of the foundation; it avoids the expense of masonry for an outside bearing, and does away with the expensive cap stone, otherwise needed; it enables the manufacturers to run, test and adjust the engine in their own shops, and to ship it without disturbing the adjustment, so that any man of intelligence can set and start the engine without the assistance of an expert. A valve balanced from all pressure higher than the exhaust, which relieves the valve and governor of the wear and tear produced by excessive friction and avoids a leaky valve stem box and chest cover joint. A relief valve, which allows the valve proper to raise from its seat in case of water and excessive pressure in the cylinder, thus avoiding the danger of a broken cylinder head and general wreck. A governor, simple, stable and so well protected from outside accidents as to relieve one of all apprehensions of falling objects interfering with its usefulness. A governor which can be adjusted to any desired degree of sensitiveness, and which has complete and perfect control of the entire valve at all times. It will be seen that the engine is of liberal proportions and thoroughly built. For additional information address Messrs. Fairbanks, Morse & Co.
