The cuts on this and the next page represent the right and left-hand sides of a new 42-inch vertical sander adapted to all kinds of work upon which surface sanding is required. The advantages claimed over other machines are: It is quicker to adjust the sandpaper on the drums and to adjust and set the rolls and drums for different thicknesses of lumber; occupies less floor space than other kinds of sanders, and the largest machine does not take up any more room upon the floor than the 30-inch, or smallest size (the floor space required is two feet nine inches by four feet six inches); the sand cylinders are operated by an entirely new device, which gives each cylinder an extra bearing or step in which it runs immersed in oil. The cylinders counterbalance each other and are moved by an eccentric cam. This device is as durable as any part of the machine and better than any worm and gear movement. The frame is very heavy and strongly ribbed to prevent any vibration while at work. All the parts are easily gotten at to adjust, oil or repair. Both sand drums are driven from one pulley, one belt running on top of the other from a pulley upon vertical shaft, making a noiseless connection. There are eight live feed rolls and two dead rolls, made from 2-inch steel; the dead rolls are opposite the cylinders. The live rolls are heavily geared by a new device in train gearing driven by shaft, &c., shown at feeding-out end of machine. The feed rolls are adjusted by the crank shown on left-hand side, which gives the different thicknesses to be sanded. The levers shown on top of machine adjust the sand drums to regulate the cut. The sand drums are 13 inches in diameter and are covered with a sheet iron hood, partly cut away in the engraving. This hood is quickly removed to replace sandpaper, and when replaced prevents all dust getting on the work. At the top is shown a pipe to attach exhaust fan to, by which all dust is taken away completely. This machine can be belted from above or below, right or left-hand side, as desired. For all kinds of wide work, such as doors, &c., this is a very handy machine, as work is run edgewise. Four sizes, 30, 36, 42, and 48 inches wide. Frank & Co., Buffalo, N. Y., are the manufacturers. |
