Image Description:
At the Engineering Exhibition now being held at Olympia the Pattern-Making Machine Co. (Wadkin & Scott-King Patents), of 16, 18 and 20, Cambridge St., Glasgow, are exhibiting their Semi-auto Pattern-Maker and Universal Wood Milling Machine, electrically driven, demonstrating its use in geometric pattern work and on other irregular wrought woodwork.

There are a number of new and interesting features of design in this machine which are worthy of special note. The cutter spindle is driven by a silent spiral gear, which feature allows the cutter to sink into the wood with its axis parallel to the surface of the work, forming a mathematically true semi-circular core groove.

The cutter-head rises vertically by hand or power, and the cutter spindle operates at any angle through a complete circle with quick and micrometer feed. Instant reversion of the cutter is obtainable by a single hand-wheel. Only the cutter spindle and lay shafts are reversed; the first and second motions are not reversed.

The main drive is by a single continuous running belt. The machine is self-contained, with three speed motions within the main standard. Electrically driven, the motor is coupled direct and runs continuously, and any non-reversing motor applies. To reverse the cutter spindle it is not required to reverse the motor.

The work table is of fixed height, has a double rotary movement, compound slides mounted on ball races, with micrometer readings; zero and limit stops to compound and circular motions; patent revolvable heads with universal motions; reversible adze edge cutters, which are a special feature, and a new pattern gear dividing table, with 30 in. dividing wheel—another important feature.

The whole equipment is of special interest. In addition to pattern work the machine is work occurring in ship's joinery and the very conveniently adapted to the irregular cabinet trades, carriage and wagon works, automobile body works, and for that class of operations which cannot be economically worked on standard machines, as in boring large irregular holes, slot chain mortising at any angle, spiral turning, square shaping newels, posts, balusters, gang tenoning and scribing at one operation, raising ornamental panels, routing, cross checking and grooving.

The machine is quickly changed from one operation to another, and the cutter spindle applies at any angle, universally. A feature of this tool is that it is adapted to take its turn upon the irregular as well as the regular operations in everyday practice, and so becomes fully employed and yields returns more than equal to any standard machine.

It is very substantially built, powerfully driven, and rigid under the heaviest cuts, and capable of carrying cutter-heads up to 24 in. diameter; owing to its extensive range and universal quick-change application to all that class of costly work which at pre sent is largely done by skilled hand labour it should become very popular in all wood working manufacturing establishments.
