In a recent issue we described at some length the constructive features of the Acme Floor Scraper, made by Joseph Miotke, 247 Lake Street, Milwaukee, Wis., and at this time, we present an illustration, Fig. 8, of the device used for sharpening the blade of the scraper. A floor scraper like a razor requires a proper edge on the blade to do good work, and with a view to enabling an operator to keep the blades of the Acme Floor Scraper in the right condition without calling upon a skilled mechanic to do the work each scraper sent out by the manufacturer is accompanied by a blade sharpener. This device is of such a character that it enables any person to put the proper edge on a blade in a very few minutes. Like the scraper, it is simple and durable in construction as well as easy in operation. When the blade of the scraper is dull it is only necessary to insert it in the clamp, place the file gauge across the guides when they are set in position No. 0, and adjust the hand screws on which the bottom of the blade rests until the blade touches the gauge. The next step is to tighten the three bolts, thereby holding the blade firmly in the clamp, after which the file is placed in the gauge, all as shown in the illustration presented herewith. The claim is made that in this position it is only necessary to file down the bevel of the blade far as the gauge will permit and until a new wire edge is formed, after which draw file the edge, leaving the guide in the same position. Next remove the file and gauge from their position on the guides and proceed to clear the edge with an oil stone until the wire edge disappears. The next operation is to use the burnisher and then add the finishing touches, all of which are described in detail in an attractively printed and illustrated pamphlet sent out by the manufacturer. The merits of the Acme Floor Scraper are also set forth at great length, rendering the pamphlet one of unusual interest to builders and mechanics who are called upon to finish floors of any kind. |
