PEARL SQUARE AUGER MANUFACTURING Co.
Rochester, N. H.-Mortising Auger and Bitts. The desire to construct an apparatus which would bore a square hole has always been the dream of mechanics. The device here shown is perhaps the most successful attempt in that line yet made. The mechanism is thus described by the exhibitors:
“The auger is simple in construction; the cutting parts being made interchangeable so new ones may be supplied when one is worn out. Great care is taken in the selection of steel for the manufacturing of these tools.
The auger is lubricated automatically through a projected channel to the cutting points and bearings and is the first tool ever invented that would cut out the corner with a circular movement without the aid of gear or cams.
The company builds machines in which to operate the auger, adapting it to any kind of work. The one exhibited is built for heavy mortising and so arranged that the work is rolled under the auger on a carriage which runs in line with the machine. The boring head has a perpendicular adjustment of twenty-five inches, also a lateral movement of thirty inches, enabling the operator to mortise a timber complete without moving it on the carriage.
A collar on the upright spindle may be set for mortising to any depth. During this exhibition the auger was worked in knotty Maple, Oak and Spruce, also Ash, Chestnut, Hard Pine and Whitewood.”
For certain kinds of work this machine seems to be a great labor saver. It is said to work admirably in making the mortises for
car building. Whether as at present constructed it can do work fine enough for cabinet work, may be questioned, but undoubtedly it will be developed to do all kinds of work. The members of the Board of Judges were all practical mechanics with large experience in wood working machines, and their opinion was expressed by their award of a Gold Medal. |
