Heavy turret lathes are now in common use for the accurate and rapid finishing of forgings and castings, which only a few years ago would have been considered to be quite beyond the scope of any form of turret lathe on account of their sizes and weights. Two series of heavy lathes are manufactured by the Gisholt Machine Company, America, one series being designed chiefly for chucked work, and the other for large-diameter bar work, although both series of machines are capable of dealing, within their capacities, with the two classes of work. Six sizes of Gisholt standard lathes are built, the principal dimensions of the smallest being 14 in. swing over the ways, 30¼. in. turret traverse, and 1 1/8 in. spindle bore, and of the largest machine, 41½ in. swing, 65 in. turret traverse, and 4¼ in. spindle bore. In the case of the big-bore Gisholt lathes the spindle bore of certain of the standard lathes is increased to accommodate bar stock of larger diameter, the other dimensions remaining the same, with the exceptions of the weights, which are necessarily increased owing to the increased size of the spindle and other parts. In the smallest of the four sizes of big-bore lathes the swing over the ways is 21 in., the turret traverse 45¾ in., and the spindle bore 3½ in., whereas the spindle bore of the corresponding standard lathe is only 2 in. The largest size of big-bore lathe has a swing of 28 in., a turret traverse of 60 in., and a spindle bore of 6¼ in., the bore of the corresponding standard machine being only 3¼ in. It will be seen that the heaviest of these lathes is capable of dealing with rod of 6 in. in diameter and is therefore suitable for rapid and accurate repetition work of a heavy description. |
