The Works of the Walworth Manufacturing Company
These extensive works are situated at Cambridgeport, Mass.; and during a recent visit to them we found so very much to interest us that we propose to give our readers a slight sketch of what is going on there. The business was first established in the year 1842 by Messrs. Walworth & Nason, which firm was afterward changed to that of J. J. Walworth & Co.; and in 1872 an incorporation was effected, which is now known as the Walworth Manufacturing Company. The warerooms and business offices of the Company were entirely destroyed in the great Boston fire; but, nothing daunted, they soon opened another place of business at 126 Union St., which was only temporary, as they have quite recently moved back to the site of their old quarters at 67 to 73 Kilby Street, Boston. The works at Cambridgeport cover about four acres of land, and the buildings consist principally of machine-shops, foundries, and forge, pattern, and stock rooms. The accompanying illustration gives some idea of how the buildings are arranged, and the facilities that exist for the transportation of materials.
About three hundred hands are constantly employed, and the establishment is well known on account of the great amount of work that is turned out yearly. |
