A development of the swiveling-rest arrangement is the ball-turning rest, fitted by the Hendey Machine Company to their lathes of 16 and 18 in. swing. This attachment, which is illustrated in fig. 49, is capable of turning balls of about 5 in. maximum diameter, and the motions are obtained by a direct or a geared hand movement, or a power feed drive through a friction clutch. The special slide or base of this rest is substituted for the regular cross slide on the bridge of the carriage. Upon this base is mounted a rotatable tool-rest, and a special locking pin is provided for so locating the position of the base on the bridge that the axis of rotation of the tool-rest lies in line with the lathe centre. The tool-rest is actually compound, the upper slide being adjustable by means of a screw so that the cutting point of the tool may be set to the required radius from the centre of rotation. The power-feed mechanism consists of a worm-gear drive contained in the base. On the worm shaft is mounted a pinion, which meshes with a spur wheel keyed on the cross-feed screw. When the cross-feed friction is locked the rotation of the screw is transmitted through the spur gearing to the worm wheel, which swings the tool through the desired circle. To use the hand-lever feed, it is first necessary to unscrew and withdraw the sleeve carrying the worm and shaft. The tool can then be freely rotated. |
