Image Description:
Automatic opening dies completely avoid the danger,—incidental to the solid type,—of stripping the threads of either the work or the die when the motion of the machine is reversed; and there is further a consider- able saving of time. When the forward motion of the turret slide is arrested, the pull exercised on the die causes the blades automatically to spring apart out of contact with the threads, and the die is withdrawn entirely clear of the work. By means of a small lever at the side of the head, illustrated in various aspects in fig. 79, the dies may be closed by hand, or they may be closed automatically in readiness for the next operation by attaching opposite the handle a projecting pin, which, by engaging with a piece on the turret slide as the turret rotates, closes the dies for the next operation. When a greater amount of stock has to be removed than can be readily done at one passage of the die, or when a highly-finished thread is desired, it is necessary to take, first a roughing cut, and then a finishing cut; and means are provided for suitably setting the chasers of the die in the two required positions.
