Image Description:
A large and powerful type of independent chuck, designed by the Bullard Machine Tool Company, America, is illustrated in fig. 66. The jaws are securely held to the slots in the chuck face by bolts, and they can be quickly reversed. The top jaws are made of special chuck-jaw steel, which has the property of being very hard, and yet not subject to distortion or fracture when under the most severe strain. Soft jaws may, however, be substituted for the hard ones, when it is necessary to prevent the surface of finished work from being marred. Screws, mounted diagonally under the top jaws, serve for the adjustment of the latter, from either projecting end of the screw, and the arrangement provides a very powerful differential movement, which resists any backward strain or tendency to loosen the jaws.
