Image Description:
In fig. 258 are shown two views of a small portable machine, designed by the makers, Loudon Brothers, Limited, of Johnstone, for operating on heavy castings, such as turbine casings, which cannot be moved about conveniently. It is arranged to be fixed on any baseplate that can be set up in a position convenient to the work. The column, of strong box section, can be moved in either direction by means of a ratchet lever through a distance of over 3 ft. along a horizontal bed, as shown in the illustration. On the column face is fitted a swivel slide, capable of adjustment through an angle of 45 degrees in one direction and the slide can be secured by. clamping bolts in any position within its range of adjustment. The slide carries the spindle saddle upon machined guides, along which it can be moved through a distance of 3 ft. It will be seen that the spindle is driven by a motor mounted directly upon the spindle saddle. By means of this motor, which is of the variable-speed type, a 3 to 1 range of speeds is obtainable, and the motor starting switch and controller are placed in a convenient position on the side of the column. An adjustable ball bearing takes the thrust of the spindle, which has a travel of 12 in., and is sufficiently strong for the boring of holes up to 1 in. diameter, and for carrying cutters up to 3 in. diameter. A motor of 1 h.p. is usually fitted to machines of this size.
