In the central-pillar type of machine, of which one example by Pollock & Macnab, Ltd., of Manchester, is illustrated in fig. 250, the turned sleeve, upon which the arm is mounted, swings around the column; and, if desired, with such an arrangement the arm can be designed to swing completely around the central column, thus enabling one piece of work to be operated upon while another piece is being set up on the other side of the bed. From the sectional view of the column (f1g. 251) it will be seen that the sleeve carrying the arm rotates upon ball bearings situated at the top and near the foot of the central column. A strong clamp is provided to bind the sleeve to the column when drilling, thus reducing the spring of the drill. Clamps are also provided for binding the arm upon the sleeve, as shown in the general view. Fig. 251 shows the method of communicating the drive through the central column to gearing at the top, from which the motion is communicated to the main driving gear of the saddle and to the arm elevating gear, through a vertical splined shaft and a vertical screw carried externally on the sleeve.

As the essential portions of the drill are indicated on the illustration (fig. 250), a detailed description is unnecessary. It will be seen that the machine has a tapping and studding spindle, in addition to the faster-running drilling spindle, and that it is driven from a constant-speed pulley through a gear-box, from which sixteen speed changes are obtain- able. In the No. 5 size of this machine the radius of the arm, from the pillar centre to the drill centre, is 6 ft., and the greatest and the least distances between the centres of the column and the tapping spindle are 64½, and 14½ in. respectively. The vertical movement of the arm on the column is 35 in. and the spindle traverse is 12 in.
