A light sensitive drill for drilling holes, from the smallest sizes up to in. diameter, is illustrated in fig. 222. The machine is entirely self-contained and is driven by belt direct from the line shaft, under which it may be set in any convenient position. It will be seen that the cylindrical column of the machine is utilized for the support of the table, which can be quickly adjusted to any height, or swung to either side and clamped in position, a line on the column being provided to indicate when the table is in the central position. A weight, suspended inside the hollow column by a steel wire connected to the table, serves to counterbalance the weight of the latter. Two arms, projecting from the front of the head, carry the vertical drilling spindle, which is moved vertically by a hand-lever rack-and-pinion gear, and is rotated by the driving belt. An adjustable stop is provided on the top of the spindle to limit its travel. A lower arm, at the rear, carries the driving shaft, on which are mounted, at the one end a fast-and-loose pulley, and at the other a three-step driving cone. The top arm carries an intermediate shaft, from the pulley of which the spindle is directly driven. The belt-shifting lever for stopping and starting the machine is situated, as shown in the illustration, within convenient reach of the operator when standing in the working position. |
