Image Description:
A typical illustration (fig. 44) is given of the carriage and slide-rest fitted to the smaller sizes of the Bradford Machine Tool Company's lathes, as well as to those of certain other makers. In this type of tool-rest a rise and fall adjustment is provided, so that the cutting edge of the tool may be readily set at the correct height to suit the work. It will be seen that the cross slide is pivoted at the front, and that by means of the screw at the back it can be angled so as to raise or lower the height of the tool. A device of this kind is only suitable for light lathes, in which the cutting forces are comparatively small, and the rapid setting of the tool position is of more importance than great rigidity of support.
