Image Description:
Many pieces of work do not require any considerable travel of the carriage along the bed of the lathe, and in machines specially designed for operating on such work, a very rigid and strong construction is obtained by bolting the saddle base securely to the bed and depending upon the slide-rest travel for the sliding motion of the tool. Provision is, however, generally made for adjusting, to a small extent, the position of the saddle on the bed, which in such cases has the necessary T grooves for the heads of the fixing bolts. A lathe of this type, designed for boring the tires of wheels, is illustrated in fig. 39. This machine, built by Tangyes, Limited, of Birmingham, has a face-plate diameter of 56 in., and the width between the face plate and the compound rest is 18 in. To take full advantage of the high speeds and cuts now made possible by the use of modern cutting steels, ample power is provided, the purchase of the gearing being about 160 to 1. Two compound slide-rests are mounted upon the fixed saddle and two tools are thus simultaneously at work. A system of ratchet wheels, operated from the rocking shaft shown in the illustration, feeds the two tools together, and the feeds are thus in a very simple manner made self-acting in both directions.

(Note: Even though the article lists the manufacturer as Tangyes Ltd., we believe that this lathe was made by Tangyes' Machine Tool Co.)
