Image Description:
Between the two adjustable bearings upon which it runs, the spindle is provided with a machine-cut gear-wheel driven from the gear-box, and the rotation of the spindle is communicated to the work through an ordinary dog, as illustrated. The spindle is driven by double gearing from a four-step cone at one end of the bed, and the handles, placed conveniently near the gear-box, provide three variations of the saddle feed. Each saddle may be separately connected to the self-acting feed-motion gear, or they may be simultaneously driven; and, in addition, they may be quickly traversed by hand by means of the usual rack-and-pinion arrangement. The transverse motion of the tool is effected by hand. Both loose headstocks are movable along the bed, so that the distance between the centres may be roughly varied to suit the length of the work, and, in addition, one of the heads is provided with a hand wheel and screw fine adjustment. To facilitate the placing of large axles on the lathe, one of the heads is also arranged to swivel clear of the centre line.

In the particular example illustrated, which is manufactured by Tangyes, Limited, of Birmingham, the height of the centres is 12 in. and the available length between the centres is 9 ft., while the overall length of the bed is 14 ft.

(Note: Even though the article lists the manufacturer as Tangyes Ltd., we believe that this lathe was made by Tangyes' Machine Tool Co.)
