Image Description:
A NEW POWER HAMMER.

The half-tone gives an excellent idea of the appearance of this hammer. The ram has, as indicated, a long bearing in the guides, which are made in one piece rounded out at the front to clear the ram and giving a strong construction; the anvil block is separate from the bed, and the lower die may be adjusted in any required direction. Instantaneous adjustment of the stroke is obtained for large or small work, by means of the hand-wheel at the side, the sprockets and chain at the rear and worm .gear at the bottom controlling the eccentric shaft which carries the rear connection for the helve. By turning the hand-wheel the dies may be opened or closed as required and the full stroke and maximum blow secured at all times if desired. The spring helve is so constructed that the tension may be varied and the spring made rigid or flexible to suit the work. The drive is through an eccentric mounted on the shaft and connected by rods, as shown, with the helve. The ram travels in bronze guides adjustable for wear and weighs 100 pounds. The maximum speed is about 275 blows per minute. The hammer weighs 4,500 pounds; it is made by Austin Bragg, Waterville, Maine.
