Image Description:
We have just received particulars of a Continuous Roller Feed and Rope Feed Saw Bench, manufactured by John Sutcliffe & Son, Ltd., sawmill engineers, of the Arden Works, Halifax. The illustration we are able to give of the machine is a particularly good one. and some details of it will. no doubt, interest our readers.

As will have been gathered from our preceding remarks, this bench is fitted with a continuous roller feed, which is specially adapted for rapidly cutting up deals into boards. rand it is also fitted with a rope feed motion for cutting up logs or any timber for which the roller feed is not suitable. The body of the bench is very strong and heavy, being cast all in one piece. The spindle is of best steel, and runs in long phosphor bronze bearings; one bearing is placed outside the driving pulleys on a strong bracket with a foot to the floor. The spindle and bearings are all made extra strong to withstand the strain of heavy work. The spindle has fast and loose pulleys of large diameter and a strap guide worked from the front of the bench. The bench top is truly planed, and is fitted with removable plates over the spindle and bearings. The feed roller is carried by a radial arm fixed on a standard at the back of the bench. The arm has a telescopic movement so that it can be adjusted to saws of different diameter. When not required the arm and feed roller can be swung out of the way to the back of the bench. The rope feed motion is driven by the same set of gearing as the roller feed. and both can be driven at four different rates of speed. The change from roller to rope feed can be instantly effected by the movement of a handle on the front of the bench. Then the handle is in its central position both feeds are taken off, in the top position the roller feed is on and in the bottom position, the rope feed is on. The fence is fitted with anti-friction rollers, and has quick adjustment by hand and fine adjustment by screw.
