The Davis 42-inch Triple Geared Engine Lathe
The accompanying illustration represents the new 42-inch triple geared engine lathe recently brought out by the W. P. Davis Machine Co., Rochester, N. Y.
This lathe has been designed to fill a demand for a first class, powerful tool at a reasonable price. The triple gearing gives the lathe a remarkably high driving power, viz. 68 to 1, and can be used with belt drive, and with back gear or triple gear. The cone has five steps, which provide fifteen changes of spindle speed. The compound rest presents some novel as well as recent improvement, which increases the already wide range of the lathe. The compound rest has power feed in all directions, the tailstock being of the cutaway, or German pattern, allowing the compound rest to be swung around close to it. The feed is arranged to reverse in the apron and can be changed instantly. A quick change by means of a lever is arranged on the front of the headstock by which four changes are quickly obtained and can be made while the lathe is running, permitting either a light or heavy chip to be taken as desired. When using the quick change for the feed, a change can also be made for thread cutting. All the changes necessary for thread cutting are made in less than one minute. The spindle is provided with a liberally proportioned thrust bearing directly on the end of the spindle. The carriage is so arranged that the compound rest can be fed out 7 inches beyond the face of the carriage, thus getting the benefit of the full swing of the lathe. The gearing in the head block, although not so represented in the illustration, is encased in a neat casing. Any length of bed required is furnished.
The principal dimensions of the lathe are as follows: The front bearing is 6½ inches in diameter and 11 inches long; the back gearing is 5 inches in diameter and 8½ inches long; the diameter of the hole in the spindle is 3 1/16 inches, and the diameter of the tail spindle is 4 1/16, inches. The lathe swings 42¾ inches, over the ways, and 30 inches, over the carriage, and with a 60-foot bed measures 8 feet 4 inches between centers. The lathe cuts threads ranging from one thread in 5 inches down to sixteen threads per inch. The cone has five sections ranging from 9 ½ to 24 inches in diameter and made for a 5-inch belt. The countershaft is provided with friction pulleys 24 x 7½ inches, and the speed of the triple gear is 150 revolutions per minute. The weight of the lathe with a 16-foot feed is approximately 19,000 pounds. |
