Image Description:
Twin Band Resaw

The twin band resaw, built by William B. Mershon & Co. of Saginaw, Mich., is a new type in resawing machinery. In design it follows the construction of the New England Ideal of the same make, but is built to carry two saws instead of cue. Hitherto in making thin box material, such as orange boxes, egg crates, cloth boards, etc., it has been necessary to pass stock back through the resaw several times— the twin machine makes two cuts at one operation, doubling the product without increasing the labor cost.

The feed is powerful and positive, consisting of a yieldingly driven pressure roll in combination with an adjustable fence in which there is a driven in-feeding roll with a series of idle rolls. The yielding pressure roll recedes eight inches from the line of cut, and the fence is adjustable to any desired position up to four inches from the cutting line of the first saw.

The relative positions of the pressure roll, fence, and saw blades may be instantly changed to conform with the work in hand; thus the back or second cutting saw blade can he quickly and accurately adjusted to any desired cutting position with relation to the other saw.

A three-inch plank may be resawn into three one-inch boards, or an inch board into three 5/16 inch pieces at one operation. The saws are 4½ inches wide, 19 to 22 gage, removing a kerf of from 1/16 to 1/20 of an inch. The rate of feed may he instantly varied from 20 to 80 lineal feet per minute, and stock up to 20 inches wide can be resawn. The combination of an adjustable fence and a single pair of driven feed rolls adapts this machine to the resawing of very short stock.

The wheels are of improved pattern, the lower pair have solid webs and are mounted on a three-inch hammered crucible steel shaft. The upper wheels are of weldless steel rim construction and are independently mounted on 2½ inch arbors. The faces of all wheels are accurately ground to micrometer measurements. The supports of the upper wheels as well as their adjustments are designed with the greatest care, and with a view of favoring the saw blade in every possible way.

The saw straining device is of approved construction; the straining lever is supported by knife edges, and a spring cushion is provided which gives a constant yielding strain to the saw blade under all conditions.

All working parts are within convenient reach of the operator, and all adjustments can be quickly and accurately made. The twin band resaw is mounted on a substantial base and is compact, strong and skillfully designed throughout. The weight is from 5,500 to 6,000 pounds; the floor space, 6 feet by 6 feet; extreme height 8 feet 8 inches; diameter of wheels: front 46½ inches, back 43¾ inches; diameter of driving pulley, 24 inches, and driving belt should be 8 inches light double.
