Key to Links for Patent Information

USPTO = U.S. Patent Office . Images of the actual patent can be viewed on the U.S. Patent Office web site but a special TIFF viewer must be installed with your browser in order properly work. More information on how to configure your computer to view these patents can be found at TIFF image Viewers for Patent Images.
DATAMP = Directory of American Tool And Machinery Patents . A sister site to VintageMachinery.org with information on patents related to machinery and tools. A much easier user interface than the USPTO's for finding information on machinery patents.

Patent Number Date Title Name City Description
226,273 Apr. 06, 1880 Wood-polishing machines Almon Bridgman Berlin, WI An etching of this catalog can be seen in a 1909 MacGregor, Gourlay Co. catalog (a woodworking machinery maker in Galt, Ontario). The base of the machine is marked, "THE BOSS WOOD POLISHER... MFG'D BY PERRY & CO. BERLIN WIS... PAT MAR 20 187? NOV 5 1878 APR 1880 APR 1881". The text for the catalog page notes that the machine is manufactured by MacGregor, Gourlay, "off patterns new and entirely remodelled." We have not listed this Canadian company as a maker of this patent because the patents had expired by that time.

447,047 Feb. 24, 1891 Wood-polishing machine James L. Perry Watertown, WI "My invention relates to that class of machines used for polishing wood in which a series of cylinders covered with sand-paper are employed and are rotated rapidly, a small part of their periphery being exposed between guard-plates in such manner as to act upon the surface of a board while passing along the top of the frame and over the said cylinders."

577,582 Feb. 23, 1897 Abrading-cylinder Franklin L. Lane Beloit, WI This important patent covers the use of a sanding drum designed so that the paper is wrapped spirally along its length. A spiral groove accommodates a small amount of overlap of the paper. The result is a cylinder that sands smoothly, without the bump-bump-bump of the designs it replaces. This innovation achieved great success for Berlin Machine Works, which became known as P. B. Yates Machine Co.

879,501 Feb. 18, 1908 Knife-holder for cutter-heads Axel Thorsby Beloit, WI
879,500 Feb. 18, 1908 Band-saw-tensioning device Burt D. Stevens Beloit, WI The innovation here is to tension the blade purely by the action of a spring; previous mechanisms had used a weight, or a weight in combination with a spring. The reputed disadvantage of a mechanism using a weight is that if a piece of scrap gets between the wheel and the blade, the inertia of the weight prevents the mechanism from adjusting quickly enough and the blade breaks as a result.
881,086 Mar. 03, 1908 Variable-speed mechanism Burt D. Stevens Beloit, WI "My invention relates to variable speed mechanisms and belt tighteners, its object being the production of a simple belt-tightening means acting on a plurality of belts passing over pulleys of different diameters whereby a variety of speeds of the driven mechanism may be secured."

913,641 Feb. 23, 1909 Multiple gage Gilbert O. Hammer Beloit, WI An ingenious gage so that a saw can be set up to do any of, say, a half-dozen different widths at a time. The gage has multiple fingers that each can be independently set to the appropriate distance from the blade. A board is butted against the desired gage and pushed forward; the other gage fingers are pushed up out of the way.

931,223 Aug. 17, 1909 Feeding mechanism for saw Harry B. Ross Beloit, WI "In double cut-off saws it has been usual to employ a feeding mechanism consisting of a pair of chains passing around sprocket wheels and having conveyer blocks or flights attached thereto at intervals and to corresponding links of the pair of sprocket chains, to feed or push the boards forwardly to the companion cut-off saws. Use of these machines has shown and demonstrated that the hinge pins or links of the chains not only become worn but that they wear unevenly, destroying the alinement of the pushing or feeding blocks or abutments, and causing improper and untrue sawing of the boards. To overcome this difficulty we have devised a feeding mechanism of the same general character as that outlined above but in which endless steel bands, which cannot stretch, take the place of the objectionable chains."
