Patent Number Date Title Name City Description
7,832 Dec. 17, 1850 Mill for sawing with circular saws Orlando Child Granville, IL Although not assigned, this patent apparently belonged to Hiram Wells of Florence, MA; see patent 12,705. This invention is for a spring mechanism used to connect the frame and the journal box for the saw arbor. The spring allows some lateral movement to accommodate lateral springing of the log.
12,705 Apr. 10, 1855 Device allowing circular-saw spindles to yield Hiram Wells Florence, MA Device allows lateral movement of sawblade to accommodate springing of the log. "For this purpose as in Orlando Child's patent of December 17th 1850, of which I am the proprietor, springs have been used and applied to journal boxes. With my improvement no such application of springs becomes necessary; nor do I use any collars on the saw spindle; nor friction rollers to embrace the saw near its periphery as is described in the patent of George Page—dated July 16th, 1841, the device I use being applied to the shaft or spindle and within one of the boxes thereof." The referenced patents are 7,832 and 2,174.
14,480 Mar. 18, 1856 Method of suspending circular-saw spindles Hiram Wells Florence, MA Another method of providing lateral play to accommodate "spring" in the log being sawed.
16,454 Jan. 20, 1857 Improved method of feeding lumber laterally in sawing-machines Samuel R. Smith Florence, MA The reissue notes that the patent was extended 7 years. The report from the Commissioner of Patents on Smith's application for extension says, in part, "Being unable for want of means to manufacture the head-block he had devised, he made an arrangement with Wells & Co., manufacturers, under which they obtained the exclusive right to manufacture and sell it, for which they paid him $500 and stipulated to furnish all that he called for at cost. Relying upon the latter stipulation and looking to it as a means of obtaining a compensation for his invention, he immediately set about introducing it into the market. He took a journey to the West for that purpose, and continued his efforts with earnestness, giving his whole time to it until his means were exhausted and he was compelled to betake himself to another employment in order to obtain a living. He failed almost entirely in making sales, owing to the causes which so often bring disappointment to the most meritorious inventors in spite of the best diligence."
