Best-known for their hand drills and related tools, Snell Manufacturing Co. also made a hand-powered portable timber mortising machine. A specimen observed in the wild is identical to the drawing in the reissued patent listed here.

Listed in the 1874 work, Wiley's American Iron Trade Manual of the Leading Iron Industries of the United States: "Snell Manufacturing Co. - E. L. Bates, agent. Augers, bits, tools, etc."
