In 1852 or 1853, Benjamin H. Otis entered into a partnership with Octavius Cottle and began manufacturing his mortising machine under the "Otis & Cottle" name. In 1857 Cottle moved to Iowa, sold his Syracuse machine shop, and became a lumber dealer. We do not know what became of Otis or the mortising machine.

Information Sources

  • From 1846, 1852 and 1853 Scientific American.
  • See the information sources listed under B. H. Otis
  • A classified ad in the 18 April 1857 issue of Scientific American indicates that Octavius Cottle of Clinton, Iowa, was selling his machine shop in Syracuse, NY, outfitted with "all necessary implements for iron and wood finishing". It seems very likely that Octavius was the "O. Cottle" of Otis & Cottle.
