Patent Number Date Title Name City Description
78,992 Jun. 16, 1868 Improvement in hangers for shafting Gerrit V. Orton Cincinnati, OH The inventor was employed at J. A. Fay & Co. at the time but it is not known if they used this patent. It is interesting as well because it contains the names of both G. V. Orton and L. O. Orton. Gerrit Van Zandt Orton was born in Hamilton, Ohio in 1834. His younger brother, Lyman Osgood Orton, was born in Eaton, NY in 1839. Gerrit definitely worked for J. A. Fay & Co., and Lyman most likely did. By the mid-1880s, Gerrit, who had moved around a fair bit, was in San Francisco where he established Orton Machine Co. In the early 1870s Lyman moved to Philadelphia where he joined the firm of Richards, London & Kelley, operators of The Atlantic Works. In July of 1877, Lyman became a full partner and the company name changed to London, Berry & Orton, and then, in 1888, Berry & Orton.
