From J. D. Dillenback & Co.'s 1870-1 Directory of the City of Grand Rapids

Founded 1856 by James C. Simonds; changed name in 1887 to J. C. Simonds & Son; the son was Frank Simonds. In 1891 they employed 9 workers. The factory was known as the Excelsior Machine Shop.
