    Industry Profile: Hamilton Associates

There are many large corporations which maintain impressive manufacturing facilities in the Baltimore metropolitan area. But there are also a great number of smaller companies nearby whose plants make contributions to the local economy which are, in their own way, just as significant as those of the bigger industries.

One of these small yet important corporations is Hamilton Associates, Inc., located in Baltimore County. A manufacturer of metalworking machines for industry and education primarily, the firm has shown steady industrial growth in more than 20 years of existence and has gained worldwide recognition for its products by exporting through the port of Baltimore.

Hamilton Associates was formed in 1950 by Bruce and Douglas Hamilton, two brothers who decided to utilize their skills in the production of subcontract machine parts. With the acquisition of one small lathe. they began manufacturing activities on their home property, working nights and weekends to supply customer demands. As a result of booming business, the Hamilton brothers in 1961 moved their growing company to the Meadows Industrial Park, not far from the suburb of Catonsville. The original manufacturing building of 20,000 square feet was completed in 1962 with a major addition of 40,000 square feet completed in 1966. In 1962, Hamilton Associates began production of one of its major products-roller guides for the rapidly expanding elevator industry. The company continued to expand its product line and in 1966 began a new skills development concept in the metals technology area for the educational market, called the "Hamilton Industrial Training System (HITS)."...

Today, the company has grown to 80 employees and makes a wide variety of small machine tools, including lathes, horizontal and vertical mills, numerically controlled vertical mills, and has developed a software curriculum as part of its HITS.

Hamilton's vocational training equipment is widely accepted throughout the U.S. and is developing sales in international markets, according to Douglas Hamilton, vice president of the company.

Significantly, the success of the company has been aided greatly by the products it exports through the port of Baltimore, currently accounting for about 18 per cent of Hamilton's annual dollar volume.

"The location of Hamilton Associates in Baltimore, near excellent port facilities and a skilled labor market, has been a key in developing company interest in world markets, which, in turn, has contributed to a healthy and prosperous corporate growth," emphasizes Mr. Hamilton...
