USPTO = U.S. Patent Office . Images of the actual patent can be viewed on the U.S. Patent Office web site but a special TIFF viewer must be installed with your browser in order properly work. More information on how to configure your computer to view these patents can be found at TIFF image Viewers for Patent Images.
DATAMP = Directory of American Tool And Machinery Patents . A sister site to VintageMachinery.org with information on patents related to machinery and tools. A much easier user interface than the USPTO's for finding information on machinery patents.

Patent Number Date Title Name City Description
22,157 Nov. 30, 1858 Wrench James R. Brown Boston, MA Brown's patent pipe tongs had the fulcrum point in a block which could be moved by an adjusting screw. Brown's Pipe Tongs (with later refinements) was a "staple" tool for plumbers etc. for decades. Late 19th & early 20th Century catalog illustrations show a patent extension dated Nov. 30, 1872 -- the Patent Gazette notes it Nov. 19, 1872, antedated to Jan. 10, 1872). Brown patented an "improvement" on July 7, 1868 (Pat. No. 79,724).
Brown became insolvent in 1860; Edward H. Ashcroft subsequently acquired rights to the Brown patent, and filed suit against J.J. Walworth Co., which had a competing claim to the rights and had been marketing Brown's pipe tongs. Ashcroft won the suit [Ashcroft v. Walworth (1872)]. Ashcroft registered his "arm & hammer over the initials EHA" trade mark for the tongs Nov. 7, 1876 {trade mark no. 4102).
