Founded in 1852 by Edward H. Ashcroft who had acquired the patent rights from Eugene Bourdon to produce the French "Bourdon tube" gauge in the U.S.

In 1880 Edward Ashcroft sold his controlling shares of all businesses to Manning, Maxwell and Moore.
