USPTO = U.S. Patent Office . Images of the actual patent can be viewed on the U.S. Patent Office web site but a special TIFF viewer must be installed with your browser in order properly work. More information on how to configure your computer to view these patents can be found at TIFF image Viewers for Patent Images.
DATAMP = Directory of American Tool And Machinery Patents . A sister site to VintageMachinery.org with information on patents related to machinery and tools. A much easier user interface than the USPTO's for finding information on machinery patents.

255,196 Mar. 21, 1882 Band or fly wheel Elmore W. Ross Fulton, NY "My invention relates to a novel manner of attaching band and fly wheels to a driving-shaft, whereby they are adapted to release themselves in the event of a sudden stoppage of the machinery driven by said shaft, and of the shaft itself, consequent upon such stoppage of the machinery, for the purpose of relieving the shaft of the driving force and momentum of said wheels and permitting them to expend their momentum without danger of injury to the other parts; and it consists in uniting said wheels, either or both, to their shaft by means of friction-gibs, which in the event of a sudden stoppage of the actuated mechanism serve to release said wheels from the shaft, allowing the latter to stop while the wheels continue to revolve..."

In the 1890s there was an agricultural equipment maker in Springfield, OH, called E. W. Ross & Co. The existence of this patent shows that the Fulton-based E. W. Ross did have some interest in agricultural equipment. We have no direct evidence on whether the Fulton, NY and Springfield, OH incarnations of "E. W. Ross & Co." are related.
