Straw-cutter
|
DeWitt C. Cumings |
Fulton, NY |
This patent was reissued twice and extended (a second extension was applied for but we cannot confirm that it was granted). The second extension application provided the information on manufacture; rights were also sold for the territories of Michigan, Massachusetts, and the rest of the country excepting New York. |

Extensible universal joint for shafts
|
Elmore W. Ross |
Fulton, NY |
This patent date was seen on an E. W. Ross planer. It is rather dubious whether the patented design feature was actually used in the planer: Mr. Ross also marked a patent date for a threshing machine on his planer! |

Band or fly wheel
|
Elmore W. Ross |
Fulton, NY |
"My invention relates to a novel manner of attaching band and fly wheels to a driving-shaft, whereby they are adapted to release themselves in the event of a sudden stoppage of the machinery driven by said shaft, and of the shaft itself, consequent upon such stoppage of the machinery, for the purpose of relieving the shaft of the driving force and momentum of said wheels and permitting them to expend their momentum without danger of injury to the other parts; and it consists in uniting said wheels, either or both, to their shaft by means of friction-gibs, which in the event of a sudden stoppage of the actuated mechanism serve to release said wheels from the shaft, allowing the latter to stop while the wheels continue to revolve..." |

Straw-cutter
|
Elmore W. Ross |
Fulton, NY |
E. W. Ross also manufactured a bandsaw. In relation to this straw-cutter patent, see also patent 13,385. In the 1890s there was an agricultural equipment maker in Springfield, OH, called E. W. Ross & Co. The existence of this patent shows that the Fulton-based E. W. Ross did have some interest in agricultural equipment. We have no direct evidence on whether the Fulton, NY and Springfield, OH incarnations of "E. W. Ross & Co." are related. |
