This company was primarily a used machinery dealer, but they apparently manufactured some machines as well. They were active between about 1902 and 1920.

Information Sources

  • 1902 The Iron Age Directory lists this company.
  • 1908 The Open Shop by the National Metal Trades Association, lists this company.
  • Mentioned in 1912 issue of Wood Craft: A Journal of Woodworking with which is Incorporated 'The Patternmaker.'
  • 1918 issue of Industrial Woodworking: "Louis E. Rechtin & Bro. 215-219 Butler St. Band Resaw, Cordesman, 42". Band Resaw, Mershon 54". Band Ripsaw, F. & E. 42". Band Saws, Egan 34"."
  • 1919 issue of The Wood-worker: "LOUIS E. RECHTIN & BRO. 215-219 Butler St. Cincinnati, Ohio Modern and Rebuilt Band saws".
  • Used-machinery ads in 1919 and 1920 issues of The Wood-Worker.
  • Used machine seen in ca. 1920 Cordesman-Rechtin catalog. Since Louis E. Rechtin & Bro. had an ad in the October 1920 issue of "The Wood-Worker", and the same issue had a used Cordesman-Rechtin machine for sale, Cordesman-Rechtin was either before Louis E. Rechtin & Bro., or contemporaneous with it.
  • Chris Vest posting on owwm.org: Doing a search of census records, etc. for occupation listing I found the following:
    • 1900 Census "Owns Machine Store"
    • 1910 Census "Manufacturer Woodworking"
    • 1920 Census "Proprietor Machine Shop"
    • 1930 Census "Sales Agent Woodworking Machinery"
Louis had two sons, Edward and Vincent Gladstone:
    • 1920 Census Edward is a "Draughtsman Machine Tools" and Vincent Gladstone is working for an electrical company but I couldn't decipher the handwriting as to his occupation.
    • 1930 Census Edward is a "Salesman & Bookeeper Advertising" and Vincent is a "Salesman Machinery".
    • Edward's 1942 draft registration card list "Cincinnati Lathe Co." and Vincent "US Playing Card Co".
