Improvement in wood-planing machines
|
Eber C. Preble |
Chicago, IL |
See patent 318,064 for an improvement to this patent design. According to that patent, this People and Preble patent represented an improvement in the state of the art due to its ability to adapt to irregularities in the thickness of the wood being planed; the mechanism used is a pair of presser rolls, an "equalizing bar" with an elliptic spring which acted to allow the to presser bars to move as need to accomodate stock variations. But this design of Peoples and Preble placed a lot of stress on the bolts, and after some wear had occurred it was possible for an especially thick piece of wood to push the chip-breakers into the cutterhead, leading to dangerous and expensive destruction. |
