We have seen both the names J. T. & R. H. Plass and just J. T. Plass, dating from the late 1860s and into the 1870s. Under either name they specialized in "safety bandsaws". Plass's patent safety bandsaw ran the blade inside the frame and column of the saw, which protected the operator from injury from blade breakage, or by contacting the blade when the blade comes off the wheels. This saw appears to be the first to protect the blade in this manner.
