Improvement in machine for sharpening the teeth of saws
|
Harford J. Perkins |
Williamsport, PA |
Inventor Perkins was a partner of Willis J. Perkins in Perkins & Co. The assignee was partner in sawmill machinery maker Snyder Brothers. This machine was seen in an 1882 Rowley & Hermance catalog, marketed as the "Climax Saw Gummer and Filer". It is uncertain if they actually manufactured the machine, though. An 1875 ad for Union Iron Works, Wm. H. Hiner & Co., says that they are manufacturers of Perkins' Saw Gummer. |

Saw
|
Willis J. Perkins |
Grand Rapids, MI |
"In sawing timber lengthwise of the grain, and particularly in sawing shingle-bolts set on end and presented to the saw sidewise, the timber is liable to spring together behind the teeth and bind the saw. It has hitherto been necessary to run the bolt backward as often as the saw became bound, and advance it to the saw again to widen the cut sufficiently to allow the saw to advance through the bolt. This backing out and advance movement in many instances has to be repeated eight or ten times, and becomes a serious nuisance on account of the loss of time thereby incurred, and the consequent increase in the cost of manufacture of shingles, or whatever else the timber is designed for. The object of my present invention is to provide a saw which will clear itself when forced through timber. With this end in view my invention consists in a saw provided with one or more series of cutting-teeth located in the saw-plate." |

Miter-cutting machine
|
Willis J. Perkins |
Grand Rapids, MI |
(Information here—and for other universal trimmers—is courtesy of Jeffrey S. McVey.) This universal trimmer was purportedly designed by Joseph A. Oliver, who had briefly worked for Fox Machine Co. Perkins and Oliver formed Grand Rapids Machinery Co. to make this trimmer, but Fox filed suit and Perkins sold his share to Oliver (in 1890). In 1892 Oliver started American Machinery Co., but continued Grand Rapids Machinery Co. until 1903, when he combined the two companies and name the result Oliver Machinery Co. We have a report of a trimmer labeled "W.J.PERKINS PAT.APR.7.91.U.S.A.ENG&GER Manufactured by Perkins & Co Grand Rapids Michigan USA". |
