Key to Links for Patent Information

USPTO = U.S. Patent Office . Images of the actual patent can be viewed on the U.S. Patent Office web site but a special TIFF viewer must be installed with your browser in order properly work. More information on how to configure your computer to view these patents can be found at TIFF image Viewers for Patent Images.
DATAMP = Directory of American Tool And Machinery Patents . A sister site to VintageMachinery.org with information on patents related to machinery and tools. A much easier user interface than the USPTO's for finding information on machinery patents.

Patent Number Date Title Name City Description
449,696 Apr. 07, 1891 Miter-cutting machine Willis J. Perkins Grand Rapids, MI (Information here—and for other universal trimmers—is courtesy of Jeffrey S. McVey.) This universal trimmer was purportedly designed by Joseph A. Oliver, who had briefly worked for Fox Machine Co. Perkins and Oliver formed Grand Rapids Machinery Co. to make this trimmer, but Fox filed suit and Perkins sold his share to Oliver (in 1890). In 1892 Oliver started American Machinery Co., but continued Grand Rapids Machinery Co. until 1903, when he combined the two companies and name the result Oliver Machinery Co.
We have a report of a trimmer labeled "W.J.PERKINS PAT.APR.7.91.U.S.A.ENG&GER Manufactured by Perkins & Co Grand Rapids Michigan USA".
476,677 Jun. 07, 1892 Dado-head Joseph W. Oliver Grand Rapids, MI From the founder of Oliver Machinery Co., an adjustable-width dado cutter. Witness Cilley was an attorney.
519,199 May. 01, 1894 Trimming-machine Joseph W. Oliver Grand Rapids, MI According to Jeffrey S. McVey, this design was used by Oliver in his No. 2, 3, 5, and 7 trimmers.
526,634 Sep. 25, 1894 Miter-cutting machine Joseph W. Oliver Grand Rapids, MI This design was used for the first American Machinery Co. miter trimmer, which was not assigned a model number.
577,777 Feb. 23, 1897 Miter-cutting machine Joseph W. Oliver Grand Rapids, MI The improvements in this patent are found on American Machinery's No. 1 and No. 4 trimmers.
582,544 May. 11, 1897 Oilstone-box Joseph W. Oliver Detroit, MI Inventor was founder of American Machinery Co. of Grand Rapids, which later became Oliver Machinery Co.
Example seen on ebay. The lid is labeled, "DETROIT EMERY WHEEL CO. / DETROIT, MICH. / OILSTONE BOX. USE KEROSENE ONLY. / OLIVER'S PAT. MAY 11,1897". We have also seen an example labeled, "TWO-FACED TURKISH EMERY OIL STONE, Oliver's Oil Stone Box. Pat. May 11 1897 Style E 8 x 2 x 1 manufactured by "Oliver" Machinery Co., Grand Rapids Mich. U.S.A."

877,407 Jan. 21, 1908 Cutter-head for planing-machines Ernst Carstens , Germany Circular cutter-head for jointers and planers. Appears to have been exclusively licensed to Oliver Machinery Co., who put it on their own machines, supplied it as an OEM part to other makers, and sold it as an after-market upgrade. This cutter-head was a big safety advance, but now considered dangerous because the head can fly apart if the bolts fail.
