Abstract:
Our invention has for its object to improve the construction and operation of agricultural and other light portable engines; and to this end consists, first, in the combination of a heater with the steam-chest and cylinder by which the steam from -the chest is exhausted to the heater for heating the water-pipes, the cylinder, steam-chest, and heater being all cast in one piece to cheapen the cost of manufacture; secondly, in the heater-cover, constructed with a hollow case or box projecting into the heater, said box receiving the pipes, which are connected thereto in such a manner that they can be detached readily for cleaning the heater; thirdly, in casting the cylinder, steam-chest, and heater in one piece, and combining them with the braces by which they are supported from the boiler; fourthly, in casting the steam-chest, heater, cylinder, the lower braces, and the upper arms, which carry the crank-shaft, all in one piece, by which the whole attachment can be easily app)lied to and removed from the boiler; fifthly, in connecting the heater and steam-chest to the reach of the carriage in such a manner as to equalize the strain between the reach and the steam-chest and heater.

Abstract:
My invention relates to that class of valves in which a variable cutoff is effected by means of a slide valve or valves working within the body of the main valve; and it consists in making the internal cutoff valve or valves to fit closely, life pistons, in the passage in which they slide, ands in extending the steam-ports nearly or quite around such passage, so that they can be made very narrow, and the valves caused to cut off the steam almost instantaneously.

Abstract:
The method of using this device will be readily understood. Prior to subjecting the beam to the action of the bending-machine one of the formers or shapers (a series of the anvil -blocks of suitable length joined together) is placed between the angles to be bent, as shown in the drawings. In the case of an I-beam two formers are employed, one on each side of the web.

A former consisting of a series of blocks constructed to have the two opposing operative faces of each pair of contiguous blocks converging from the inner curve of flexion to fa fixed fulcrum-line of bearing ,of one of said blocks on the other, and a flexible connecting device for said series located between the said curve of flexion and the line of the series of fulcra or bearings. |

Abstract:
The present invention relates to the mechanism for effecting the rotation of the scraper ring or plate F or its adjustment around its vertical axis. To accomplish this, a series of gear-teeth are formed along the inner edge of the ring, they being concentric with its axis and of a number sufficient to permit as wide a range of adjustment as is desired.
Claim:
In a machine of the class described the combination with the adjustable scraper, the means for adjusting it, and the lock, entirely independent of the said adjusting means, for holding the scraper after adjustment, of a power-transmitting device adapted to actuate both the lock and the adjusting means. |

Abstract:
Heretofore ignition-plugs have been made or proposed with electrodes-passing longitudinally through the plug and insulated therefrom by means of spools or blocks of porcelain; but it has been found impossible to properly and thoroughly pack the passageway around the electrodes and extending through the plug when the insulation is made of this material. The porcelain is not sufficiently yielding or elastic to insure that a tight joint or packing shall be attained. It does not fit accurately either the electrodes or the plug against which it bears. Again, the materials of this sort are fragile and are constantly liable to breakage because of the force applied to them by the fierce explosions which take place in the cylinders of explosive, engines. From both these causes (the lack of a perfect packing and the cracking or breaking of the insulators) -there have resulted leakage of the gas or vapors and products of combustion and also a loss of current due to the inferiority of the insulation. These difficulties I have avoided by employing a combined packing and insulating material which is elastic or yielding and capable of being drawn tightly against the electrodes and also against the seat for the packing in the plug or cylinder-wall, such packing and insulating material being provided in masses preferably made up of thin elastic refractory disks or sheets of suitable material, such as mica cut into the form of washers. Preferably these are used in the way above described-that is to say, a suitable number of the refractory washers are placed together to form a gasket.

An ignition-plug for gas-engines, having longitudinal chambers each formed with an internal shoulder near its outer end, electrodes passing through said chambers and provided with clamping means or heads, insulating material surrounding the electrodes within said chambers and held against said shoulders, and insulating material at the head of the plug cooperating with the electrodes A o hold the material within said chamber against said shoulders. |

Abstract:
It will he observed that the pneumatic means for advancing the straw have independent and separated discharge-orifices arranged one in advance of the other and all arranged so that the blast, from each enters the straw passageway from below, and also with a movement in substantially the direction which is being taken by the straw as it advances toward the main delivery-duct, and from this arrangement it follows that the straw is successively both lifted and advanced by the air.

The combination with a threshing-machine of the straw-delivery duct, the straw-receiving duct communicating therewith, the chaff-duct communicating therewith and situated below the straw-receiving duct, blast devices supplying air to all of said ducts, and means for dividing the blast to cause the same to act independently on the straw at different points. |

Abstract:
This invention relates to improvements in motor-vehicles, the object being to provide mechanism by which the power can be applied more efficiently and economically than it can be in any vehicles of this class with which I am acquainted. I so construct and arrange the parts that I can apply power to each of the four ground-wheels, and thus make available the entire tractive efficiency of those wheels; secondly, apply the power to the wheels of the front pair equally at all times, though they are moving at different speeds and in paths of different radii, and, thirdly, apply the power to the rear wheels in such way that they also shall be furnished with an equal degree of power although moving with different peripheral speeds, and, fourthly and particularly, apply the power to the rear pair of wheels and to those of the front pair in such way that the two pairs can move in different curves without interference from cramping or binding and without requiring that any wheel should slip in relation to the others.
Claim:
The combination of the truck-frame, the steering -wheels, the pivoting devices con-fleeting the steering-wheels with the truck-frame, the power-transmitting devices at the axis of the said pivoting devices for actuating the steering-wheels, and a motor situated between the front and rear wheels operating in lines transverse to the vehicle and connected with said power-transmitting devices, substantially as set forth. In a motor-vehicle, the combination of rear traction-wheels, front traction-wheels, as motor situated between said front and rear wheels and operating in planes transverse to the vehicle, power-transmitting devices extending longitudinally of the vehicle for transmitting power to said rear traction-wheels and to said front traction-wheels and power connections between the motor and said power-transmitting devices to actuate the same. |
