From September 1920 Machinery |
Active 1919 through 1921, the S. A. Potter Tool & Machine Works manufactured a toolmakers bench lathe. This lathe came standard with a steady-rest which might suggest that it was intended for wood-turning. But ads and articles make clear that the lathe was for metalworking and came equipped for use in auto shops and the like. A number of optional accessories were available, including single and double cross slides, lever tailstock, tailstock turret, grinding attachment, etc., which could adapt the lathe for production use.
Information Sources
- Several ads and articles can be found between 1919 and 1921, but we could not find a single data point before or after that time. The company's address was 77 E. 130th St., New York City. Before 1919 that address was occupied by the Phinney-Walker Keyless Clock Co., and after 1920 it was occupied by Sainberg & Co., Inc. (makers of desk pads). Sainberg's move to that address was announced in the March 1924 National Association News (National Association of Stationers and Manufacturers).
