In the late 1860s this firm made a metalworking lathe. We, and others, have been unable to find any information on the maker.
Information Sources
- We learned of this lathe in a PracticalMachinist.com discussion. The plate on the lathe reads, "SHERMAN & CO / MAKERS, / PROV. R.I."
- The 1869 edition of Russells' American Steam Printing House's Official Railway Manual of the Railroads of North America has an advertisement for the New York City firm of Lindsay, Walton & Co., "agents for Sherman & Co., Providence, R.I., manufacturers of lathes, planers, drills, etc., etc." Lindsay, Walton & Co., successors to Walton & Leonard, sold machinists' and railroad supplies.
