Founded in 1793 by Alsatian emigré John Jacob Holtzapffel, this firm made ornamental turning lathes. By the time of his death in 1835 he had made some 1600 lathes. His son Charles continued the business until his death in 1847. His wife ran the business until 1853, Charles and Amelia's son, John Jacob II, took over the business and ran it until 1897. By that time the fashion for ornamental turning had declined, and although John Jacob II's cousin, George William Budd, took over the business, it went under soon after.
