Patent Number Date Title Name City Description
63,532 Apr. 02, 1867 Improvement in boring machines Charles B. Knapp Waterloo, WI This machine is notable because it made what became known as the Knapp joint, also called the pin and scallop joint; see the images accompanying patent 122,390. In 1870 Knapp reportedly sold the rights to this machine to a group of investors who formed the Knapp Dovetailing-Machine Co. in Northampton, MA. The machine saw considerable commercial success. This design evolved over time; see patents 122,390, 388,760, and 4,302. The Knapp joint faded in popularity and was obsolete by 1900.
"First, I claim the pawl, N, hung to the framework, A, in connection with the ratchet teeth of the carriage, I, and operating substantially as described for the purpose specified. Second, the guide bar or rail, J, arranged to slide at the front end of the carriage and operating in combination with the arm, Y, of the framework, A, substantially as and for the purpose specified."
D4,302 Aug. 23, 1870 Design for joining wood Charles B. Knapp Waterloo, WI This patent covers the pin-and-scallop joint, for which inventor Knapp had already patented machinery. This type of joint (and hence the machinery to make it) was very popular in the late Victorian era. It is quite distinctive and is often seen on antique furniture of the appropriate era. See also patents 63,532, 122,390, and 388,760.
