Founded in 1883 as a reorganization of the
Hopkins Watch Tool Co. by Caleb Van Norman and his sons, Edmund F., Frederick D. and (later in 1888) Charles E. Van Norman. The company reorganized again in 1912 as the
Van Norman Machine Tool Co.
