Information Sources
- A letter received from the grand daughter of C. L. Hawes provided most of the the information on this maker.
- An earlier business that made pasteboard, strawboard and bookbinders' supplies was established in 1852, Clark & Hawes. In 1872 it became C. L. Hawes. In 1885 it became C. L. Hawes Co., and in July 1889 the business was acquired by the American Strawboard Company of Akron. All of this information came from various issues of Inland Illustrator, especially the July 1889 issue. Given the decades-wide span between this earlier series of companies and the later company, they are presumably not directly related.
