We have seen a drill press with "Mfg. by / Malone Machine Co. / Ottumwa Iowa" cast into the head. Malone Machine Shop was established about 1943 by W. G. "Pat" Malone. Sometime between 1958 and 1960 the business seems to have changed ownership, and in 1961 the business became part of Winger Manufacturing Co. It seems likely that the drill press was made only during the early years of the Malone Machine Shop.
Information Sources
- We learned of this maker in an owwm.org forum discussion.
- A search for information on this maker did not turn up a single data point other than the above-mentioned drill press.
- Thanks to Patricia Essick, reference librarian at the Ottumwa Public Library, who provided us with the following data.
- 1943—The first listing for the Malone Machine Shop. The owner's name was WG "Pat" Malone, and the business was located at 312-314 West 3rd here in Ottumwa. The listing also described the business as offering "All kinds of Welding and Machine Work." The business was listed under "Machine Shops" in the directory.
- 1945—listing was the same.
- 1947—listing was the same except it was listed under "Machinists" rather than under "Machine Shops".
- 1951-1957—listings were the same as 1947.
- 1958—no listing at all.
- 1959—no city directory available.
- 1960—Malone Machine Shop is once again listed; however, there are new owners: Lloyd Winger, president; Barney Winger and Clifford Winger, VPs; Walter Winger, VP/Secretary; and Henry Winger, VP/Treasurer. There is also a new location: 211 East 4th Street (Ottumwa). The listing is still found under the heading "Machinists."
- 1961—no longer listed as Malone Machine Shop. Now listed as Winger Manufacturing Company Inc. Still located at 211 East 4th Street. Now the listing is under the heading "Steel Fabrication". You can "google" Winger Manufacturing in Ottumwa for further information on their business, which was quite prominent.
- From Ottumwa: 100 Years a City, 1948, by John C. Taylor, Jr., does not mention Malone at all. It does say that Winger Manufacturing Co. was incorporated in 1939 and was engaged in light steel fabrication, particularly for the meat packing industry.
- From the 2006 book Ottumwa, by Michael W. Lemberger and Wilson J. Warre, comes this caption from a photo of an industrial area.
Winger Manufacturing. Incorporated in 1939 by Barney, Lloyd, and Walter Winger, Winger Manufacturing, at center of photograph, engaged in light steel fabrication, particularly meatpacking equipment such as hand trucks, tables, conveyors, and containers. The complex, located at 1200 East Main Street, was destroyed by fire in January 1956.
