Key to Links for Patent Information

USPTO = U.S. Patent Office . Images of the actual patent can be viewed on the U.S. Patent Office web site but a special TIFF viewer must be installed with your browser in order properly work. More information on how to configure your computer to view these patents can be found at TIFF image Viewers for Patent Images.
DATAMP = Directory of American Tool And Machinery Patents . A sister site to VintageMachinery.org with information on patents related to machinery and tools. A much easier user interface than the USPTO's for finding information on machinery patents.

Patent Number Date Title Name City Description
607,566 Jul. 19, 1898 Gas Engine Charles Jacobson Erie, Erie County, PA
667,151 Jan. 29, 1901 Vise John R. Long Springfield, OH This vise was sold as the Will-Burt "Versa-Vise" and the Columbian "Gyro Vise". They are favored by instrument makers such as luthiers. After years of no availability, the original vise design is again available. A former employee of Will-Burt, now running his own machine shop, acquired the original manufacturing prints and resumed manufacture. See the "Jon-Mar / Will-Burt Versa-Vise" link under the patent image.
"My invention has relation to improvements in vises for general use among carpenters, wagon-makers, blacksmiths, and other artisans; and it has for its object the construction of a vise having jaws that can be adapted to move in a vertical or horizontal plane to adapt them to the requirements of the operator, that can be rocked about the center of either plane to any desired angle, and in which the tightening of the vise shall lock it against movement in either plane."
667,152 Jan. 29, 1901 Vise John R. Long Springfield, OH "My invention has relation to improvements in vises for general use of mechanics; and it has for one object the construction of a vise the jaws of which may be arranged to extend above the clamping-screw in the ordinary manner or to project laterally from the screw, so that the jaws lie in a horizontal plane and in either position shall be revolvable about a supporting-pivot.
"A further purpose is to so arrange the parts that the tightening of the vise shall lock the vise against rotation on its supporting-pivot, and a final object is to so construct the various parts that they will cooperate accurately with a minimum of friction."
The November 1903 issue of "The Gas Engine" carried an advertisement for the "Jacobson Universal Friction Vise" from Jacobson Machine Mfg. Company. The illustration matches the patent drawing, and also shows the patent date.
