Founded in 1862 as the Glasgow, MacPherson & Co. to manufacture Threshers and Horsepowers. A sister factory was located in Fingal, ON and named the Macpherson, Glasgow & Co. The Clinton factory began to offer a "Monitor" portable steam engine about 1874. It was similar to the "Champion" steam engine being offered by the Waterous Engine Works Co. in nearby Brantford, ON.

After William Glasgow died in 1882, the Clinton, ON factory took on a new partner, W. Farran and along with Matthias Hovey, reorganized the firm as Farran, MacPherson & Hovey. About 1890, Mr. Farran sold out his interest and the firm again reorganized as MacPherson & Hovey. Around 1900, the firm discontinued manufacturing steam engine and began selling the Waterous "Champion" steam engine.
