Key to Links for Patent Information

USPTO = U.S. Patent Office . Images of the actual patent can be viewed on the U.S. Patent Office web site but a special TIFF viewer must be installed with your browser in order properly work. More information on how to configure your computer to view these patents can be found at TIFF image Viewers for Patent Images.
DATAMP = Directory of American Tool And Machinery Patents . A sister site to VintageMachinery.org with information on patents related to machinery and tools. A much easier user interface than the USPTO's for finding information on machinery patents.

140,722 Apr. 01, 1920 Improvements in Built-up Cutters for Use in Milling Machines or Other Machine Tools Alfred Herbert , England Abstract:

Milling-cutters; boring-bars.-Cutters for use in milling, and for boring-bars, &c. have one face of each of the inserted' blades flat and serrated to engage a corresponding face on a locking wedge. As applied to a surfacing cutter, the inserted blades A, Figs. 1 and 2, are made from stock of the section shown in Fig. 3, and are secured in inclined holes in the body that is correspondingly coned at B<2>. The serrated flat face A<2> is engaged' by a corresponding face C<3> on a conical wedge secured by a screw D. In a modification, Fig. 4. flat blades are secured in transverse slots milled right across the body.

170,648 Oct. 24, 1921 Improvements in Work Tables and Work Chucking Devices for Milling or for Like Machine Tools Alfred Herbert , England Abstract:

A circular table A, Fig. 2, fitted with two work-holders disposed at 180 , is mounted on the main table B<2> of a milling-machine and is rotated during the idle return thereof by ratchet mechanism A<30> driven through gearing from the shaft O, which is also mounted in the main table and is rotated by the engagement of a fixed roller D<4>, Fig. 1, with the helical groove D<3>. The table A<3> is locked during the cutting traverse by a spring-pressed bolt A<5>, the latter being disengaged prior to indexing, by rack-and pinion gearing, from the quadrant lever A<12>, which may be operated by hand, or automatically by an adjustable stop A<15> op the fixed bracket C<2>. The locking pressure on the pad A<16> which additionally clamps the rotary table in the indexed position is applied through an eccentric spindle A<18>, Fig. 4, by a spring-pressed rod A<19>, and is released by a hand lever A<32> or by the engagement of an adjustable collar A<22> with the bracket C<2>. Change-feed and reverse gears are provided for the main table B<2>.

456,128 Nov. 03, 1936 Improvements relating to the hardening of metal surfaces Herbert Howarth Beeny , England "This invention relates to the production of cast-iron articles, such as rails, having a hardened surface, the hardening being effected by a local heating of the surface, by means of a burner, whereafter the heated part of the surface is immediately cooled." The assignee firm, Alfred Herbert, Ltd., made lathe rails using a centrifugal casting process, and they used this flame-hardening process to harden the rail surface. The patent also mentions hardening sand-cast lathe beds. A 1957 catalog from the American lathe maker Monarch Machine Tool Co. lists this British patent.
