Patent Number Date Title Name City Description
5,661 Jul. 11, 1848 Boring and mortising machine Alfred Swingle Galveston, TX This machine was written up in an 1849 issue of "Scientific American", which gave its manufacturer as N. Hunt & Co. It is seen in an 1858 catalog from J. A. Fay & Co., but we believe that in this case J. A. Fay & Co. was a reseller rather than a manufacturer.
9,365 Nov. 02, 1852 Improvement in sewing-machines Christopher Hodgkins Boston, MA
10,374 Jan. 03, 1854 Mode of banding pulleys for saws Dexter H. Chamberlain Boston, MA "... or in other words, a Mode of Driving the Shaft of a Circular Saw or other Piece of Mechanism..."
The specification says that the patent is assigned to "Chamberlain & Hunt" but we have found no evidence for any such partnership. The 1854 "Journal of the Franklin Institute", in reporting on this patent, says, "Dexter H. Chamberlain, assignor to himself and Nehemiah Hunt, Boston, Massachusetts."
10,622 Mar. 07, 1854 Improvement in sewing-machines Christopher Hodgkins Boston, MA
10,879 May. 09, 1854 Improvement in sewing-machines Christopher Hodgkins Boston, MA Of interest because the assignee apparently also manufactured a hub mortising machine and the inventor later manufactured woodworking machinery.
12,848 May. 08, 1855 Machine for sawing wedges or shingles John Taggart Roxbury, MA
16,705 Feb. 24, 1857 Device to operate the mandrel-cutters in turning tapering sticks Peter H. Niles Boston, MA
