Hoyt & Brother Manufacturing Co. dates back to 1870. In 1889 or '90 the name changed to Hoyt & Brother Co. In 1897, it was one of eleven companies that merged to form American Wood Working Machine Co. Planers, Matchers and Molders in America notes that Hoyt's planer-matchers were an immediate success for American. The Hoyt division of American also built a line of moving-bed timber sizers.

This firm built the "Invincible" triple-drum sander under license from Berlin Machine Works.

• A Charles Hoyt of West Aurora got an 1856 patent for a stave-making machine.
• Batory's catalog listing for this maker says, "Est. 1870". Batory excerpts an 1888 catalog of Hoyt & Brother.
• The 1874 work, Wiley's American iron trade manual of the leading iron industries of the United States has an entry for "Hoyt & Brother Manufacturing Co." of Aurora. It is listed as a foundry and machine shop "Specialty, wood-working machinery. Number of hands employed, 40."
• In 1872, Charles L. Hoyt and Lucius P. Hoyt of Aurora received a patent for a two-sided thicknessing planer. In 1886, Lucius patented a chain-feed thicknessing planer.
• An ad in the May 1889 issue of "The Wood-Worker" features Hoyt & Bro. Manufacturing Co.'s "best double blind wiring machine in the world".
