In 1856 C. G. Harrington, William H. Harrington, and Jonas Heald bought the assets of the highly successful tool maker T. H. Witherby, which they operated as Harrington, Heald & Co.. Included in their new product line was a Gould pattern mortising machine. The business failed in November 1859 but re-emerged as T. H. Witherby Tool Co. We do not know if the Gould pattern mortiser was manufactured under this name.

Information Sources
- Thanks to correspondent David LaRue, who alerted us to this maker and pointed us to a useful web page on T. H. Witherby that had information on Harrington, Heald & Co. as well.
- The Heart of the Commonwealth, or, Worcester As It Is, by Henry Jenkins Howland, 1856, carried a full-page ad for this firm that includes an illustration of a mortising machine that is very clearly a Gould pattern machine. These machines were made for many years by various firms and this is one of the earliest appearances of this mortiser that can be definitely dated.
- The 1859 Monthly Law Reporter reports that on 1858-11-08, C. G. Harrington, William H. Harrington and Jonas Heald, doing business as Harrington, Heald & Co., had filed for insolvency.
